National Association of State Directors of Art Education
An Affiliate of the National Art Education Association
The National Association of State Directors of Art Education, NASDAE, has been an affiliate of the National Art Education Association,
NAEA, since 1966. Members of NASDAE are State Department of Education dues-paying NAEA members; State Department of
Education directors, supervisors, coordinators, consultants or other titled state representatives that oversee visual arts education in that
state’s public education system. There are no other dues beyond NAEA membership dues, at this time, for NAEA NASDAE members.
NASDAE meets annually in conjunction with the NAEA National Convention. Most commonly the meeting is the day before the
Conference opens but that does vary from year to year. The President makes arrangements for the meetings, coordinating with NAEA for
room use and when the annual meeting will be held and then notifies membership. Commonly the next annual meeting date/time is
determined at each annual meeting, for the following year. Other meetings face-to-face, by conference calls, webinars and the like may be
called by the President, as needed, in any year.
NASDAE meets to discuss issues that are of visual arts concern and interest. The affiliate exists to:
A. identify and promote sound art education curricula, programs, and policies.
B. work cooperatively with the NAEA, its affiliated organizations, and other professional organization in recommending policies;
programs; projects, publications, legislation, and research which will help clarify, strengthen, and expand the role
of the visual arts and other arts in education and society. With that in mind, its President sits representing NASDAE at Delegate’s
Assembly at the NAEA National Conference and reports out on the annual meeting and concerns and matters around visual arts
education nationally from the states’ lens, at the Interest Group session with the NAEA President and Executive Director.
C. encourage the establishment, maintenance and furtherance of art education positions in state departments of education.
D. exchange ideas and information among members of NAEA.
State Directors overseeing visual arts education that have not joined NASDAE, and are NAEA members, are invited to contact the
President (see officer and membership list) and join in this collaborative annual gathering. Our website is www.nasdae.org
